Kindergarten Sight Words
An important component of learning to read is developing a bank of words that children can read automatically, without stopping to decode them. These are often called Sight Words. Sight Words are words that appear frequently in most of the text people read, but they can't easily be sounded out. Learning them helps children become more confident readers.
In Mrs. Hellyer's Kindergarten, we learn sight words in different ways and we call them different names. Kindergarten Sight Words are words that every child in kindergarten in Roxbury is expected to be able to read by the end of their kindergarten year. These are assessed periodically throughout the year to determine a child's progress. Heart Words are a "Mrs. Hellyer thing", not necessarily done in all Roxbury kindergartens. Heart words are words that we learn to "read, spell and write by heart". We begin working on them from the beginning of the year with the power sentence: "I love you."
Trick Words are the words that our Fundations phonics program emphasizes beginning in the middle of the year.
Personal Sight Word Lists are words that each child works on at his/her own individual level. This will begin later in the year, and children will bring home a set of 5 words at a time that they will work on with you at home as well as in school.
All of these different methods and lists will enable each child to read all or most of the required Kindergarten Sight Words long before the end of the year, and make their reading easier and more enjoyable. Weekly newsletters will keep you informed on the focus words for each week, and your help with reinforcing them is greatly appreciated!
